PREMIERE | Bluetoof - Mistakes [Gather Records]

Southend crew Gather Records launched GAT002 on May 1st revealing their second split EP, showcasing two more seriously talented UK producers in Bluetoof and previous guest on our Threads Radio show, Soundboy Cookie. With just a few copies remaining in stores, the self-distributed 001 has almost sold out; two cuts each from Jubley & 9Trane made for a solid start for the label and by the sounds of 'Blue Cookie' we are forecasting 002 to do the same.

Fresh off the release of his Debut EP on Benton's BBS imprint, Bluetoof kicks off the EP on the other end of the breakbeat scale with 'Mistakes'. Prolonged chords make for the smoothest of intro's whilst a sporadic baseline and soft keys build up for the hats to lay the foundation for a wicked low-end and, that Sax solo. Call us controversial but this is the closest and most original anyone has come to the Groove Chronicles classic Stone Cold and it comes as no surprise from a really exciting young producer, in today’s thriving UKG climate. Listen to the track in full, exclusively via our Soundcloud.

Soundboy Cookie comes through on the B side in typical fashion. Since his first release on VEX Records in the middle of last year, SBC has built a solid rep for his punchy drums and sampling of hip-hop vocals. Having arguably developed one of the most signature styles of all the newbies, his side on the EP is equally one to shout about. The standout track on this side is ‘Brooklyn Swing’ but both tracks equal the smoothness set by Bluetoof making this EP perfect fit for the Sunday sessions we are all hoping for post-lockdown.
